The issues in energy are clear. Fossil energy sources are short-term cheap, cheaper than short term nuclear. Nuclear manages to hide 300 million pounds of high-level radioactive waste across America in places we don’t know much about. We do know its not in a bunker someplace, safe and secure. It is, as it was at Fukushima in a ‘cooling pond’. It is a problem with a many trillion dollar downside.
A trillion dollars buys a lot of solar panels. A gigawatt for a billion dollars, a terawatt for a trillion dollars.
But today, let’s examine oil. A scary recovery of oil sales in the US is taking place as the economy grows.
Just 2 1/2 years ago, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and sank in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11, releasing 4.9 million barrels of crude oil.
To get an idea about carbon fossil fuel pollution, consider US oil consumption is about 18 *Million* *barrels* *a* *day* of crude.
The Oil spill in the Gulf and its massive impact, released just 1/4 of 1 day’s US consumption of oil. A few hours of a day’s worth of consumption is equivalent to the entire oil spill that cost BP billions.
Where do you suppose over 1,000 times the Gulf Oil Spill goes *every* year? Ya, you guessed it. Into the atmosphere. (and this figure doesn’t account for natural gas consumption)
you can argue all day long about how global warming isn’t happening or fossil fuels are ‘clean’, but these massive numbers tell the story. 1,000 times the amount of oil spilled in the Gulf is being burned each year from America alone.
and we wonder why pot is legal.
