Islanders United – San Juan Islands Gigabit Broadband

Its been a couple of years since Google’s Gigabit broadband community project was announced. Over 1100 communities applied and some have moved forward with plans.

Unlike the more advanced communities, like Chattanooga, the San Juan Islands have shunned fiber optic Google Gigabit style approach and local power company officials are touting a wireless system that would require building out over 100 huge telephone poles to be home to an antenna array, including Cellular and a new internet wireless device, undisclosed at present.

Can that approach work? Not for long, it would seem. Check the article here for an approach much closer to Google’s plan and the success other communities have had.
