It wouldn’t be Orcas Island without a place for locals to speak their minds in public. The first of its kind in the Islands, Speaker’s Corner across the street from Wildlife Cycles, was donated by Heinz at Enxzo’s.
Heinz build Speaker’s Corner for Labor Day weekend and it was available to the public on September 2, 2012. Islanders take to this beautiful outdoor mini-stage, offering a poem and a comment on the future of sold waste management – a hot local topic.
What a wonderful, egalitarian, spontaneous community contribution. Today, we’re taking one more step toward greater self-governance and participatory democracy. A really great American and global tradition.
